E-72 “eco” paper developer

Categories Paper Developers

I have started using this paper developer as like FX-55 and Barry Thornton’s two bath film developers, I can make it at home when needed.

at 20 degrees normal RC paper dev time is about 2 minutes.

Use at 250mm + 750ml water for normal contrast. 1:1 %00ml + 500ml if you want more punch.

Warm Water 50 Degrees approx.750 ml
Phenidone*0.3g *
Sodium Sulphite (anh)45 g (2 tablespoons)
Ascorbic Acid (Vit C) **19 g (4 1/4 teaspoons)
Sodium Carbonate77g (9 tablespoons)
Potassium Bromide1.9g (1/4 + 1/2 1/4 teaspoon)
Cold water to 1ltr

* Phenidone I make a 1% solution in Propylene Glycol which makes it easy to measure out. 10ml per 0.1g

1g Phenidone to 100ml of PG which I pre warm to about 60 degree C make the Phenidone easier to mix.

required. I make all my Phenidone on buying it into 100ml bottles and use when needed. Also PG keeps the Phenidone alive for a very long time indeed.

** Make sure use Ascorbic Acid and not Sodium ascorbate we use in FX-55 developer as they are two different Vitamin C’s

A rule of thumbs is to watch the development time closely and as soon as you start to see a faint image developing on the paper not the time and times that by 5.

So is you see the image start at 20 seconds your full dev time will be around 1 min 40 seconds.

If your total time hits 3min then make anew batch of developer.
